What is Accelerated Reader?
New York Primary School has embraced the Accelerated Reader programme and it has become an intrinsic part of the curriculum for children in key stage 2 (Years 3 to 6)
Accelerated Reader is a personalised reading programme that meets the needs of individual pupils. Pupils are given their Reading Range – their ‘Zone of Proximal Development’ – this enables them to find a book which is appropriate to their reading level. Class teachers and Teaching Assistants encourage children to read a variety of books to develop their literacy skills and help them to meet the challenges of life in the 21st century.
The children are given time each day to read and are given help with their development of reading fluency and comprehension. After finishing their book the children take a computerised quiz which gives instant feedback on their progress.
A comprehensive set of reports reveals how much a pupil has been reading, at what level of complexity, and how well they have understood what they have read. Vocabulary growth and literacy skills are also measured, giving New York teachers insight into how well pupils have responded to reading schemes and class teaching.
